About
Hi, I'm Head Coach Robinson. I've been playing chess for over 10 years, logged more than 25,000 games, and spent the last 4 years working with kids right here in Portland.
I've competed and placed in local Portland tournaments, so I know what it takes to grow from beginner to confident player, and more importantly, I know how to make that journey fun for kids.
My favorite moment in every class is when a concept finally clicks and you see it on a kid's face. That's what keeps me teaching chess every day of the week.
I'm excited to bring chess and everything it teaches, focus, patience, strategic thinking, to more Portland families this summer. I'd love to help build your child’s confidence and focus this summer.
For the chess nerds:
I play Najdorf Sicilian, Queens Indian, and Nimzo for Black.
I play QGA Central Variation and Catalan for white.
SyllabusThe Capablanca Method
Former World Champion Jose Raul Capablanca Advocated for the Back to front method of learning chess. This means after learning the rules, we teach students about the endgame and how to win then work backward to the opening. I teach a bit of opening theory early, just so the beginning isn’t a total mystery.
